The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization recently declared transhumance pastoralism as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The notion of heritage seeks to recognize the culture behind the seasonal grazing movements along herding routes, between distant and dissimilar ecosystems. The pastoral families move with their herds from pasturelands used during the winter (winter-lands) to areas pastured during the summer (summer-lands). Whereas this is a key step towards the recognition of the cultural dimension associated to this ancient practice, a (...) relevant feature of transhumance pastoralism is its strong linkage with environmental dynamics. This activity developed in a spatiotemporal and co-evolutionary trajectory, which gave rise to a pastoral territory. A territory is the union or linkage of a meaning with a specific place, that is, the space that is appropriated and valued, both symbolically and instrumentally, by human groups. Hence, the pastoral territory represents the socio-ecological system that integrates a pastoral-based community with the natural environment that it inhabits. We propose a co-evolutionary approach to analyzing some key attributes of transhumant pastoralism, which modulate the socio-ecological interdependence. Based on a study case from Northwest Patagonia, Argentina, we identified and characterized seven attributes: (I) mobility, (II) connectivity, (III) temporal synchrony, (IV) local interdependence, (V) local ecological knowledge, (VI) adaptive capacity legacy, and (VII) mixture of land tenure. We discuss these features as examples that represent keystone socio-ecological attributes for the recognition of transhumant pastoral territories as a biocultural heritage. (shrink)

This article addresses the issue of properly assenting children with psychotic disorders to participate in clinical research. Due to the protective concerns with such a vulnerable population, additional precautions are necessary to ensure that youth with psychotic disorders assent to research with an appropriate level of understanding regarding study procedures. Current literature suggests that positive/negative symptoms and minor cognitive deficits do not interfere with the ability to comprehend study-related information for adults with psychosis if the study information is presented through (...) an educative process. Similarly, youth benefit from repeated presentation of procedures and periodic assessment of their comprehension. An integrated educative process is proposed that emphasizes the importance of an interactive consent through repetition and participant/investigator feedback. (shrink)

In the United Kingdom, the debate about how best to meet the shortfall of organs for transplantation has persisted on and off for many years. It is often presumed that the answer is simply to alter the law to a system of presumed consent. Acting perhaps on that presumption in his annual report launched in July, the Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, advocated a system of organ donation based on presumed consent, the so-called “opt-out” system.1 He is calling for (...) a change in the law in England and Wales whereby consent to organ donation is presumed, making a person’s organs automatically available for transplantation after death, unless they registered objections to this while alive. Subsequently, the British Medical Association lent its support to the introduction of such a system.2 The BMA contends that “the practice of presumed consent legislation has had a significant effect on the number of cadaveric donors per million population.”2It is often taken for granted that there must be a correlation between the enactment of legislation on presumed consent and an increase in organ donation and procurement. However, the correlation is not as straightforward as it might seem. It may be that other practical measures to encourage organ donation could be implemented without changing the Human Tissue Act 2004, an Act which has been in force for barely a year.An analysis by Abadie and Gay demonstrated that “presumed consent legislation has a positive and sizeable effect on organ donation rates”,3 but they themselves admitted that the correlation between rates of donation and presumed consent legislation is “not completely unequivocal”.3 It is true that among the most successful cases in procurement rates are countries with presumed consent legislation . This rich and varied collection of essays addresses some of the most fundamental human questions through the lenses of philosophy, literature, religion, politics, and theology. Peter Augustine Lawler and Dale McConkey have fashioned an interdisciplinary consideration of such perennial and enduring issues as the relationship between nature and history, nature and grace, reason and revelation, classical philosophy and Christianity, modernity and postmodernity, repentance and self-limitation, and philosophy and politics.

Given its non-invasive nature, there is increasing interest in the use of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation across basic, translational and clinical research. Contemporaneously, tVNS can be achieved by stimulating either the auricular branch or the cervical bundle of the vagus nerve, referred to as transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation and transcutaneous cervical VNS, respectively. In order to advance the field in a systematic manner, studies using these technologies need to adequately report sufficient methodological detail to enable comparison of results between (...) studies, replication of studies, as well as enhancing study participant safety. We systematically reviewed the existing tVNS literature to evaluate current reporting practices. Based on this review, and consensus among participating authors, we propose a set of minimal reporting items to guide future tVNS studies. The suggested items address specific technical aspects of the device and stimulation parameters. We also cover general recommendations including inclusion and exclusion criteria for participants, outcome parameters and the detailed reporting of side effects. Furthermore, we review strategies used to identify the optimal stimulation parameters for a given research setting and summarize ongoing developments in animal research with potential implications for the application of tVNS in humans. Justifying involuntary psychiatric treatment on the basis of a judgment that a person lacks capacity is usually expressed in terms of a person’s ability to make a decision about his or her health and treatment. Typically, this relates to the ability to refuse treatment. It has become increasingly difficult for individuals to exercise meaningful control over the personal data they disclose to companies or to understand and track the ways in which that data is exchanged and used. These developments have led to an emerging consensus that existing privacy and data protection laws offer individuals insufficient protections against harms stemming from current data practices. However, an effective and ethically justified way forward remains elusive. To inform policy in this area, we propose the Ethical Data (...) Practices framework. The framework outlines six principles relevant to the collection and use of personal data—minimizing harm, fairly distributing benefits and burdens, respecting autonomy, transparency, accountability, and inclusion—and translates these principles into action-guiding practical imperatives for companies that process personal data. In addition to informing policy, the practical imperatives can be voluntarily adopted by companies to promote ethical data practices. (shrink)

We introduce a novel transdisciplinary conceptual framework that revolves around concepts of 'lenses' and 'tensions' to help navigate value diversity. First, we consider the notion of lenses: perspectives on value and valuation along diverse dimensions that describe what values focus on, how their sociality is envisioned, and what epistemic and (...) procedural assumptions are made. We characterise fourteen of such dimensions. This provides a foundation for exploration of seven areas of tension, between: (1) the values of individuals vs collectives; (2) values as discrete and held vs embedded and constructed; (3) value as static or changeable; (4) valuation as descriptive vs normative and transformative; (5) social vs relational values; (6) different rationalities and their relation to value integration; (7) degrees of acknowledgment of the role of power in navigating value conflicts. In doing so, we embrace the 'mess' of diversity, yet also provide a framework to organise this mess and support and encourage active transdisciplinary collaboration. We identify key research areas where such collaborations can be harnessed for sustainability transformation. At the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 became a global problem. Despite all the efforts to emphasize the relevance of preventive measures, not everyone adhered to them. Thus, learning more about the characteristics determining attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic is crucial to improving future interventions. In this study, we applied machine learning on the multi-national data collected by the International Collaboration on the Social and Moral Psychology of COVID-19 (N = 51,404) to test the predictive efficacy of constructs from (...) social, moral, cognitive, and personality psychology, as well as socio-demographic factors, in the attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic. The results point to several valuable insights. Internalized moral identity provided the most consistent predictive contribution—individuals perceiving moral traits as central to their self-concept reported higher adherence to preventive measures. Similar was found for morality as cooperation, symbolized moral identity, self-control, open-mindedness, collective narcissism, while the inverse relationship was evident for the endorsement of conspiracy theories. However, we also found a non-negligible variability in the explained variance and predictive contributions with respect to macro-level factors such as the pandemic stage or cultural region. Overall, the results underscore the importance of morality-related and contextual factors in understanding adherence to public health recommendations during the pandemic. (shrink)

Pancreatitis is a complex, progressively destructive inflammatory disorder. Alcohol was long thought to be the primary causative agent, but genetic contributions have been of interest since the discovery that rare PRSS1, CFTR and SPINK1 variants were associated with pancreatitis risk. We now report two associations at genome-wide significance identified and replicated at PRSS1-PRSS2 and X-linked CLDN2 through a two-stage genome-wide study. The PRSS1 variant likely affects disease susceptibility by altering expression of the primary trypsinogen gene. The CLDN2 risk allele is (...) associated with atypical localization of claudin-2 in pancreatic acinar cells. The homozygous CLDN2 genotype confers the greatest risk, and its alleles interact with alcohol consumption to amplify risk. Ethics courses are most commonly evaluated using reaction measures. However, little is known about the specific types of reaction data being collected and how these reaction data relate to improvements in trainee performance. Using a sample of 381 ethics training sessions, major reaction data categories were identified. Content and course satisfaction were the most frequently collected types of reaction criteria. Furthermore, content relevance and course satisfaction showed strong, positive relationships with performance criteria, whereas content satisfaction demonstrated a moderate, negative relationship. This essay examines Foucault's stance towards the Enlightenment as formulated in three works he published in the last decade of his life. These works represent a partial modification of Foucault's attitude to the Enlightenment, rather than the dramatic shift claimed by some commentators. In order to substantiate this claim, the essay provides a reconstruction and critical assessment of three articles Foucault devoted to Kant and the Enlightenment, namely, ‘Qu'est-ce que la critique?’ , ‘Kant on Enlightenment and Revolution’ , and ‘What (...) is Enlightenment?’ . It argues that Foucault's reformulation of Enlightenment ideals in terms of an ethos of transgression and an aesthetic of self-fashioning is much closer to Nietzsche's vision of a transvaluation of values than to Kant's notion of maturity and responsibility. This chapter draws upon the archaeological and philosophical literature to offer an analysis and diagnosis of the popular ‘ancient aliens’ theory. First, we argue that ancient aliens theory is a form of conspiracy theory. Second, we argue that it differs from other familiar conspiracy theories because it does distinctive ideological work. Third, we argue that ancient aliens theory is a form of non-contextualized inquiry that sacrifices the very thing that makes archaeological research successful, and does so for the sake of (...) popular accessibility. Rather than merely dismissing ancient aliens as ‘pseudoarchaeology’ on demarcationist grounds, we offer a more complicated account of how the theory works, and what ideological work it does. D'où un véritable "piège identitaire", négation de l'autre et de sa subjectivité, parfois justifié par l'anthropologie - à l'opposé de sa vocation humaniste et critique. Face à ce défi, le regard contemporain sur le monde doit être repensé, en dépassant le relativisme culturel et ses "ontologies" identitaires. Dans ce livre, Michel Agier prend une position (...) résolument "décentrée", invitant le lecteur à reconsidérer les sens de la frontière : lieu de passage, instable et sans cesse négociée, elle nous fait humains en instituant la place et l'existence sociale de chacun tout en reconnaissant celles des autres. Le mur est son contraire : il incarne le piège identitaire contre l'altérité. Cette enquête sur l'état du monde et sa violence, sur les frontières et les murs, sur le sens des mots ("identité", "civilisation", "race", "culture") propose ainsi une réflexion originale sur la condition cosmopolite, figure à double face : d'un côté, l'étranger absolu, global et anonyme, que dessinent les politiques identitaires sous des traits effrayants ; de l'autre, le sujet-autre, celui qui, venant de l'extérieur de "mon identité", m'oblige à penser tout à la fois au monde, à moi et aux autres. En plaidant pour la validité de l'approche anthropologique, Michel Agier montre ici que pour dépasser le piège identitaire, d'autres manières de penser sont possibles. Réapprendre à passer les frontières où se trouve l'autre, à les reconnaître, est devenu l'un des enjeux majeurs de notre temps. (shrink)

Nous voudrions montrer, à partir d’une relecture du (...) 2e Discours (362) de Grégoire de Nazianze (329-390), dont Foucault tire le concept d’une « économie des âmes », que cette idée ne présuppose nullement la référence au schéma trinitaire et renvoie bien davantage au modèle du « patronage » romain, couplé à la figure sacerdotale du bon berger. Cette analyse conduira, en outre, à rappeler le lien de la « direction des âmes » avec le paradigme médical. (shrink)

On a pu croire ou espérer, un temps, que les monstruosités de la Seconde Guerre mondiale étaient derrière nous. Définitivement. Or partout, à nouveau, on massacre, on torture, on extermine. Comment comprendre cette facilité des hommes entrer dans le mal? La réponse à cette question devient chaque jour plus urgente. Michel Terestchenko rouvre ici le débat. D'abord, en complétant la démonstration de Hannah Arendt : de même que ce ne sont pas seulement des monstres qui basculent dans l'horreur mais (...) des hommes ordinaires, trop ordinaires, de même, montre-t-il, il n'est pas besoin d'être un saint pour accomplir le juste et secourir des victimes au risque de sa vie. Héros ou salaud? C'est toujours une petite décision initiale, à peine perceptible, qui décide du côté dans lequel, une fois engagé, on se retrouvera in fine. Mais qu'est-ce qui explique cette décision? C'est là où l'enquête de M. Terestchenko prend toute son ampleur. En procédant à une reconstitution critique du débat central de la philosophie morale depuis le XVIIe siècle, aujourd'hui relayé par la majorité des sociologues et des économistes, elle montre combien est stérile l'opposition entre tenants de la thèse de l'égoïsme psychologique et défenseurs de l'hypothèse d'un altruisme sacrificiel. Les travaux qui analysent les phénomènes de soumission à l'autorité, de conformisme de groupe ou de passivité face à des situations de détresse, invitent à comprendre tout autrement les conduites de destructivité. Tirant les conclusions philosophiques de recherches récentes entreprises en psychologie sociale et s'appuyant sur certains exemples historiques particulièrement éclairants - tel le cas de Franz Stangl, le commandant de Treblinka, ou, à l'opposé, les actions héroïques du pasteur André Trocmé et de sa femme Magda au Chambon-sur-Lignon -, l'auteur propose de penser les conduites humaines face au mal selon un nouveau paradigme celui de l'absence ou de la présence à soi. Dans cet article, je tente de dégager les linéaments d’une politique messianique. Pour ce faire, je m’appuie sur la figure du chiffonnier tracée par Walter Benjamin, dont je parcours les différents traits. Il y va ici essentiellement d’un travail de sauvetage des lambeaux sacrifiés par le progrès dans sa marche nécessairement oublieuse et injuste. Un travail de sauvetage qui ne promeut aucune habileté triomphante, mais qui maintient la fragilité toujours menacée d’une exigence constamment à reprendre. Pour en interpréter la temporalité (...) spécifique, je me réfère aux travaux de Gérard Bensussan sur le messianisme. Il en résulte alors l’énoncé d’une politique faible, qui s’emploie à défaire les assurances du pouvoir, à limiter la toute-puissance de l’État, pour faire entendre les voix oubliées et soumettre la politique à une inspiration radicalement hétérogène. Quand on examine des discours écrits par des femmes cherchant à définir la différence de la femme, on aperçoit de manière patente cette difficulté à nommer la différence. En comparant un texte de E. Harding, psychanalyste jungienne et un texte de M. Montrelay, psychanalyste lacanienne, on constate que malgré (...) des provenances théoriques et historiques éloignées, le féminin n'est dit qu'en référence au masculin. Avec notre mode de pensée , le désir d'égalité générale s'avère vélléitaire. Seul un discours éclaté qui donne lieu aux différences permettrait une mentalité égalitaire.Equality, when it is understood as equality for all, even though it is judged favorably in general, is hardly realisable because of the structure of our thinking that organizes the differences in dichotomies and in hierarchical oppositions. When we examine the discourses written by women that tend to define a difference of the woman, we realize the difficulty to name this difference. When we compare a text written by E. Harding, a jungian psychanalyst and another written by M. Montrelay, a lacanian psychanalyst, we observe that despite their distant theorical and historical sources, the feminine is said in reference to the masculine. Pour faire un pas dans cette direction, il semblait clair à ses yeux qu’il serait approprié de tenir (...) compte, notamment, des recherches qui se sont intéressés aux locutions performatives. Car, ajoutait-il, le langage est, en un sens, une carte de l’esprit. Dans cet article, je souhaite faire un pas de plus, m’engager dans le chemin tracé par Lipman, mais en faisant appel cette fois à un linguiste, Gustave Guillaume – et la science linguistique dénommée psychomécanique du langage - qui a consacré l’essentiel de ses efforts, en tant que linguiste, à comprendre comment la pensée construit le langage en se construisant par le langage. Dans un premier temps, j’exposerai les principales articulations de la théorie de Guillaume concernant le langage, en me concentrant sur les distinctions qu’il y a lieu d’établir entre la langue et le discours. Ces deux réalités s’opposent à plus d’un égard. Ainsi, par exemple, alors que la langue est une chose qu'on emploie, le discours est le lieu de l'emploi que l'on fait de la langue. De plus, alors que la langue est le résultat d'une construction qui s'étale sur un espace de temps très long, le discours est un ouvrage dont le temps de construction est relativement très court. Qui plus est, au moment où le sujet parlant entre en activité de langage il a devant lui un discours à construire alors qu'il possède en lui une langue déjà construite. Dans un second temps, en m’appuyant sur les distinctions préalablement établies, j’examinerai comment ces différentes articulations prennent forme dans le jeu subtil des articles un et le en français, en montrant de quelle manière cette catégorie grammaticale représente une variation du concept qui n’est pas à confondre avec celle que les logiciens reconnaissent habituellement sous les termes de compréhension et extension du concept. Troisièmement, j’inviterai le lecteur à imaginer ce qu’il en aurait été du premier roman de Lipman – La découverte de Harry – si ce dernier avait connu la théorie linguistique de Gustave Guillaume concernant les articles. Cela aurait peut-être conduit Lipman à écrire une toute autre version de son roman philosophique. Imaginant ce que cela aurait pu donner pour quelques-uns des chapitres de ce roman, nous tenterons alors de nous mettre dans la peau du personnage principal – Harry – et de voir comment il aurait pu être conduit, aidé par ses pairs, à entrevoir que son entreprise de questionnement touchant la pensée propose, somme toute, un renversement complet dans le monde de l’éducation. Ce titre inscrit l’approche de la pensée grecque par S. Weil dans une perspective téléologique conformeà une apologétique héritée des Pères de l’Église, mais étrangère à la pensée de S. RÉSUMÉ Je veux m'attarder à trois aspects importants du Droit des gens de John Rawls. Je veux tout d'abord montrer que cette oeuvre contribue à réfuter l’interprétation erronée selon laquelle Rawls souscrirait à une conception individualiste du libéralisme. Je veux en deuxième lieu souligner l’importance d'intégrer un droit des peuples au sein de la philosophie politique libérale. Le principe de l’égalité entre les peuples peut être interprété comme ayant un corollaire, à savoir, le principe du développement égal des peuples, et (...) ce dernier principe est susceptible de nombreuses applications progressistes au niveau de la justice internationale. En troisième lieu, je veux suggérer que même si des amendements importants étaient apportés à la version initiale du Droit des gens, au point d'inclure, à l’encontre de l’opinion exprimée par Rawls, le principe de différence et d'en reconnaître l’universalité, on ne serait quand même pas en présence d'un libéralisme de type individualiste. ABSTRACT I would like to consider three important aspects of Rawls' Law of Peoples. I want to show, first, that the work serves to refute the mistaken interpretation according to which Rawls would subscribe to an individualistic interpretation of liberalism. Second, I also want to underline the importance of incorporating a law of peoples within a liberal political philosophy. The principle of equality between peoples can be interpreted as having a corollary, the principle of an equal development between peoples, and this last principle paves the way to many progressist applications at the level of international justice. Third, I want to suggest that even if amendments were made to the initial version of The Law of Peoples in such a way that, pace Rawls, it would now contain among its principles the difference principle and would recognize its universal status, the resulting approach would still not be a liberal individualism. Michel Senellart partant de la lecture de Vattel (1714-1767) pose la question de l’« Étatisation de la guerre » et de la « qualification de l’ennemi », centrales pour réfléchir sur l’humanisation de la guerre fondée moins sur la définition du type de guerre que sur celle de ceux contre qui on se bat, ce qui permet le maintien d’un lien entre jus in bello et jus ad bellum. Les lectures divergentes de Vattel faites par Schmitt et par Bluntschli (...) conduisent à poser le problème de la place des États dans les lois de la guerre, le second défendant la création d’une législation supranationale, au nom d’une logique de paix et de respect du droit des gens, alors que le second considère une telle instance supra étatique comme un des facteurs de « barbarisation » de la guerre car elle criminalise l’ennemi et brouille la distinction traditionnelle entre « ennemi » et « brigand ». M. Senellart conclut son intervention en posant que la vraie distinction n’est peut-être pas celle qui différencie normativisme (Bluntschli) et décisionnisme (Schmitt) mais celle qui oppose conception républicaine (reconnaissant une légitimité au peuple en armes) et conception étatiste, d’où une distinction possible entre ennemi actif et ennemi passif. S'il est vrai que l'auteur des Actes des Apôtres peut être en un sens considéré comme le premier historien du christianisme, s'il est également vrai que les Ile et Ille siècles ont vu naître des écrits qui ont entre autres une portées historique , c'est avec Eusèbe de Césarée que surgit la conscience de produire, avec son Histoire ecclésiastique, quelque chose de nouveau : « Je suis, en effet, le premier, écrira-t-il, à m'avancer pour ainsi dire sur un chemin désert (...) et inviolé. » Après avoir étudié l'oeuvre d'Eusèbe, M. Fédou présente ses continuateurs en Orient et en Occident avant d'examiner sa position par rapport à l'historiographie païenne et la manière dont les historiens plus tardifs ont interprété l'histoire de l'Eglise pendant et après la crise de l'arianisme.If it is true that the author of the Acts of the Apostles can be considered in a sense the first historian of Christianity, and if it is also true that the 2rd and 3rd centuries saw the birth of writings that, among others, have a historical importance, , it is, nevertheless, Eusebius of Caesarea who gave rise to an awareness of producing something new with his Ecclesiastical History. He wrote: “I am, indeed, the first to go forward, as it were, on a deserted and inviolate road.” After studying the work of Eusebius, M. Fédou presents his commentaries on East and West before examining his position as regards pagan historiography and the manner in which later historians had interpreted the history of the Church during and after the crisis of Arianism. En conclusion de deux dossiers, et faute de pouvoir traiter le sujet sous tous ses aspects, M. Fédou l'aborde ici sous l'angle suivant : qu'est-ce qui, dans la situation de notre temps, aurait chance de féconder une réflexion de théologie fondamentale et dogmatique sur « le christianisme et les autres religions » ? Ainsi formulé, le questionnement a au moins deux implications. D'une part, malgré la grande diversité des religions et de leurs contextes sociaux, politiques ou culturels, il doit y (...) avoir encore place pour une réflexion théologique qui ne considère pas seulement telle religion en particulier mais l'ensemble des religions. D'autre part, nous avons moins à proposer une « théologie des religions » qu'une réflexion théologique sur « le christianisme et les autres religions » : cette dernière formule suggère que le regard des chrétiens sur les religions ne saurait être indépendant de leur confession de foi ; elle attire en outre l'attention sur les rapports mêmes entre le christianisme et les diverses religions du monde.To sum up two endeavours and, without any claim at dealing with the subject comprehensively, M. Fédou takes it up here from the following angle: given the situation of our times, what might have a good chance of making reflexion about fundamental and dogmatic theology concerning “Christianity and other religions” fruitful? Formulated in this way, this reasoning has at least two implications. On the one hand, in spite of the diversity of religions and their social, political or cultural contexts, there must still be room for a theological reflexion that does not limit itself to considering just one particular religion, but that takes the ensemble of religions into account. On the other hand, it behooves us to propose, not a “theology of religions”, but rather a theological reflexion on “Christianity and other religions”: this latter formulation suggests that the view Christians have of other religions could not be independent of their own confession of faith; it likewise focuses on the relations between Christianity and the various religions of the world. La danse contemporaine ne cesse d’interroger le corps dans sa prétendue unité et identité substantielle, organique, mécanique et signifiante. Elle déconstruit les conceptions et les gestions du corps. Par cela elle révèle les dimensions et les puissances ignorées du corps. Nous proposons, en nous appuyant sur les travaux fondateurs de M. Bernard, de suivre une ligne conceptuelle des déconstructions du corps susceptible d’éclairer les projets esthétiques de certains chorégraphes contemporains.

La parution récente en français du livre de M. Denton : “Evolution. Une théorie en crise” , qui traite des theories explicatives actuelles de l'évolution, nous amine à rappeler les caracteres généraux des grandes theories biologiques et à présenter une critique sommaire du livre en question.La science West pas une simple accumulation de connaissances. Le scientifique ne doit pas se contenter de decrire et de mesurer des faits. Son but eat d'essayer de les relier et de construire des théories qui (...) tentent de nous faire comprendre le “reel”, objet de ses recherches.Cependant, la nature du matériel biologique — c'est-à-dire les espèces vivantes et les catégories qu'on y a reconnues, classe ou ordre par exemple — est si complexe qua la biologie actuelle est fort loin encore Wavoir réalisé une synthèse qui ressemble, méme très approximativement, à la classification de Mendéleiev pour les éléments chimiques.Malgré cette complexité, les biologques ont réussi à construire la th6orie du fait de l'evolution et ils proposent aujourd'hui une théorie explicative de cette évolution qui, bien qua critiquée, est incontestablement bien étayee. Nous allons essayer de définir la structure des grandes théories biologiques; ensuite nous analyserons sommairement quelques-unes des critiques qui sont adressees aux theories de l'évolution.Considering the publication in French version of Michael Denton's book, Evolution : A Theory in crisis , in which he critizes the synthetical theory of the biological evolution, we thought it useful to point out the main errors of argumentation contained in that book by first referring to the characteristics of general biological theories.In biology, there exist elementary theories - such as that dealing with the extinction of giant Reptiles - and general theories - such as the chromosomic theory of heredity and the explanatory theory of evolution. The latter generally consist of a group of elementary theories imbricated so that they form a whole like a jig-saw puzzle. An example is provided by the synthetic theory of evolution that can be defined in 20 propositions divided into two categories : the propositions relating to the naturalists' observations - which correspond to descriptive concepts - and those relating to the data of the population genetics - which correspond to explanatory concepts . The general scheme of the theory is formed by a network of relations between the descriptive concepts and the explanatory concepts. There also exist other theories in general biology supported by thousands of minor facts which only together can be of proof of validity. These theories are quite reliable and cannot be questioned by facts still to be explained. Questioning can only happen if they are confronted to well-established data in nearly equal numbers.In his work, Denton does not deny the phenomenon of biological evolution, but he criticizes the syntheticians' ideas by emphasizing that no great evolutive changes can be accounted for by the complex mechanism of random mutations and selection. He goes back to a typological concept of the zoological classification in some way similar to that of Vialleton's. However, Denton agrees with the phenomenon of the biological evolution and accepts the existence of "saltations" among the great zoological groups. The arguments used by Denton merely show that he is not conversant with the complexity of sciences particularly in comparative anatomy and zoology, the teaching of which is being somehow neglected today.By giving as an example the structure of the aortic arches in Amphibians and by a summary of the variations of those structures and the evolution of the blood-circulation in Vertebrates, we proved that the typological argument is of no value. As a matter of fact, a study of the now living beings clearly shows the gradual transition - e.g. a transition by a very large number of feasible stages - from the Lower Vertebrates to the Higher Vertebrates. In particular, there have been several attempts at double circulation and there still exist many species in which the blood of the double circulation is mixed. It seems therefore obvious that the double circulation has been achieved, stage by stage, with many intermediate schemes; we are inclined, therefore, to conclude that this succession of small transformations was produced by a huge mechanism of selected small mutations.Our present-day biological knowledge includes a number of examples large enough to consider the “argument of the impossible” used by Denton is due to inadequate fossil data and not to any mysterious mechanism such as macromutations. Let us say again that the typological structures seem to occur only when the data of comparative anatomy and zoology are over-simplified. (shrink)

Dans cet article, je reviens sur l’héritage laissé par Karl Marx dans la pensée de Michel Foucault. Organisant l’analyse autour de quelques « oppositions » conceptuelles cruciales – accumulation et discipline, reproduction et biopouvoir, régime de vérité et idéologie, révolution et ascèse –, je tente de mettre au point quatre grands schèmes relationnels susceptibles d’éclairer leurs rapports : la complémentarité, la confrontation productive, le rejet, et la réconciliation. L’objectif de cette analyse est de proposer une alternative à un nombre (...) croissant d’interprétations conservatrices de Foucault en montrant que d’autres grilles de compréhension de son œuvre sont possibles, tout en essayant de mettre en lumière ce que cette lecture « minoritaire » pourrait amener en termes de stratégie et de luttes politiques. Perelman a remis à l'honneur la rhétorique en 1958 et l'a appliquée à la philosophie morale, politique et juridique aussitôt, montrant ainsi la fécondité de son approche. Reprenant l'œuvre d'Aristote et la poursuivant, il a fait de la rhétorique et de l'argumentation la nouvelle matrice des sciences humaines après la mort du structuralisme. A l'occasion du centenaire de sa naissance, les auteurs réunis ici lui rendent hommage, mais aussi poursuivent, par leurs propres recherches, l'idée que la rhétorique comme l'argumentation sont (...) centrales.
